Rose Harriet, owner of Counseling and Play Therapy Center LLC, is opening a new location in Gillette with help from WCA programs. Here’s a deeper look into her journey, mission, and advice for future entrepreneurs.
What is your company mission/vision?
Our mission is to provide the best mental health care for our clients, and that starts with the therapist. The best therapists build excellent relationships with clients and engage in on-going training, consultation, supervision, and clinician self-care.
What makes you stand out from your competition?
We specialize in Experiential Play Therapy. To ensure we meet the 'Gold Standard,' play therapists all work toward their Registered Play Therapist credential. Training, supervision, consultation and advanced education are all required for our therapists. I believe we are the premier play therapy center in Wyoming.
What motivated you to expand Counseling and Play Therapy Center LLC?
I was in private practice for 18 years and there were many children who needed excellent play therapy. I could not see everyone, and my passion is to help all our clients heal from trauma, regardless of age. I hired one therapist who could meet my standards to achieve this goal. This process continued and people were driving to Buffalo from Sheridan and Gillette seeking counseling. It made sense to provide services in those cities to ease the burden of travel while providing therapy for those in need.
What challenges have you faced with your expansion efforts?
Hiring high quality therapists who want to learn play therapy and work with children has been the biggest hurdle. In Wyoming, we need more mental health providers and many therapists are not interested in working with small children. Another big issue has been finding suitable space for the unique needs of a play therapy/counseling office. We need multiple playroom spaces at each location in addition to offices, and those types of buildings are limited in Wyoming.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to start a business in Wyoming today?
Everything starts with the owner of the company. It takes constant, daily attention to create a business. Being highly organized, knowing all aspects of the business and doing them all yourself is required -- at least in the beginning years. Be wise and hire the best support people that work in your best interests -- starting with people who do the jobs in which you do not have expertise. That might include a CPA, the most reliable cleaning company, or any facet of your business where someone else can fill a significant duty. Then monitor and engage with those people on a regular basis so you know exactly what is happening. Also, every square foot of your company has to be generating income.
